Don’t Just Organize Them – Add a Little Pizzazz to Your Closets!

With the heated days of summer coming to an end and chilly Autumn evenings already upon us, we know it won’t be long before we need to pull out the warmer pieces of our wardrobe. With this we also know that we will need to take a little bit of time to rearrange our closets and armoires, so that we can get to those clothes that we wear the most.

It doesn’t matter if your space is one that is out in the open for everyone to see, or a quiet little closet in the back room, we could always use a little bit of color & a decorative touch to warm things up and give it that feeling of home.

This year… along with taking some time to organize everything, why not take just a little bit of extra time and add a bit of pizzazz to your space? After all, even though no one else may see it, you still have to face it every day. So, why not make it a place that you enjoy, instead of a place that you dread digging through like a pirate after treasure!

Just a few extra touches and a bit of color can help change your whole attitude as you face each day!

I love how Pam Garrison uses pieces of scrapbook paper or wall paper to cover the walls of her closet for a wonderful decorative touch. Notice the pieces of sheet music & note paper that also cover the shelf itself.

Here’s another picture of an inside wall. The family photos added here and there are a nice finishing touch. In this case, Pam used some childhood pictures of her father.

Look at these wonderful ideas from Patricia at Vintage Treasures.

Not only does she enjoy all of her own linens, but she also has a business dealing with vintage linens, so she really needs to keep herself organized! I think you’ll agree, that she has come up with some wonderful ideas in the pictures below.

Lets have a look…

I like her idea of placing a hook, or a group of hooks, on the back of a closet door to display special things such as this beautiful nightgown. She also added some pretty little roses to dress up the hook itself. And how about that little night stand tipped over on its side to be used at a different angle!

Here’s a close up of that little night stand. It’s been given a nice “shabby” coat of paint, and lined with some wallpaper in the background.

What was once a napkin holder (or book ends) can now be a beautiful place to display an item in your closet such as the towel was in this case.

pretty shelves

I can’t say enough about the charm that a vintage suitcase brings to any room! Look how the vintage linens pop against the deep blue velvet lid of this piece.

As in this picture, you can use shelving that can be found at any discount store very inexpensively, then use some of the items that you are storing in this area to dress up the shelves themselves – like these pretty lacy pieces.

If you have bits of trim that you haven’t found a project for, how about putting them to work decorating the edges of your closet shelves?

Amazing Way to Design Your Home, Fashion, and Art Like a Pro!

Before I begin… let me warn you… the following information could be VERY dangerous! Please continue at your own risk!

Actually, what I mean is… you’re going to love this website & the service that they provide so much, that it could become extremely addicting if you’re not careful 😉

It’s called: Polyvore

Let me try to sum up the service that they provide their members… they give you the technology to digitally arrange all of your favorite items into one beautiful collage.

It’s very simple to get started. You just enter a few bits of information to become a member (free), and then you are able to start creating right away!

After you log in, you will see a few examples of the completed collages that other members have made. I like looking through these, as they are great for ideas! Then, you can begin pulling all of your bits & bobs together to form your own new little pieces of art 😉

You can choose from the huge selection of images already at the site, or you can use their “clipper” tool to snip bits from around the web. If you do choose to snip something, the item is always linked to it’s original location, so it also helps bring the original owner some great publicity. For example, say you make beautiful jewelry and you list your items on Etsy. If someone where to clip your item & add it to their collages, not only would they be able to use it, but now it would be available to all the other Polyvore members as well. Now think about what might happen if several members used your item to build their collages… 100s – 1000s of people will start seeing your pieces & want to click the link to see where they can buy one!

* I’m thinking of all of my wonderfully talented friends (Madai 😉 out there who make such beautiful pieces! Now… I have some more ideas to help “spread the word” about their products!!!

I can think of several uses for this wonderful service without even giving it much thought, so I thought I’d share a few over the next few days to help get you started on your creative way!

I’m sure that you will be able to come up with many other great uses for this service… so be sure to share them with us in the comment section below!

Today, I want to share some ideas about planning out your wardrobe.

Now, you can pull all of the pieces together, and see how they look before you buy! And, since the links are all in tact for each item, you could simply purchase online & have them shipped to you – instead of having to actually go shopping 😉

Look at some of these examples found at Polyvore.

Next up? How about planning your wedding, special party, or room deocr using this tool?

Delicious No-Bake Orange Juice Cookies

My mom & I had these tasty little treats at a recent baby shower that we went to. I had no idea what the little orange colored balls would taste like since I had never even heard of this no-bake cookie, but once I ate one, I knew I had to have the recipe! They are so simple to make, and give a real burst of flavor!

Once you try this easy recipe, I think you will add it to your list of favorites!

1 box of vanilla wafers – usually 12oz
1 6oz can of frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
1 box of powdered sugar – 16oz
1/2 cup butter
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 1/2 cups of coconut

Crush the vanilla wafers until fine. Mix vanilla wafers, orange juice, powdered sugar, butter, and chopped pecans. Shape the mixture into walnut-size balls, and roll in coconut. Store balls in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator. Makes approx. 5 dozen cookies.

So easy – yet so delicious!

Creative Eye Candy to Inspire You From Michal Negrin

Today I’ve decided to pass along some luscious bits of eye candy to spark some fresh ideas for creating newly decorated spaces your home.

Sorry guys, but I’m afraid that this post is going to be mostly pulling the heart strings of the gals 😉

Sarah, a friend of mine, recently sent me a link to a store that she had found while on vacation with her family. She let me know ahead of time, that the prices cater to the high end customer… and she was VERY right in her perception 😉 But… being the creative souls that we are, I know that all we have to do is, take a peek into the home of Michal Negrin to gain a fresh excitement for pulling our bits & bobs together in beautifully creative ways!

The store is called Michal Negrin

Please do yourself a favor & at least window shop around the store, because you’ll come away with such a warm feeling of femininity & romance 😉 It’s no wonder as Michal takes great joy in helping women feel & reflect romance, femininity, love and style, which is something we can all appreciate!

I suggest watching the video a couple of times! Then, as you look around the inside of this home, look at the rooms as a whole, as well as the individual pieces that pull the look together.

Then you will be able to look through your stash of items that you use to decorate with, and pull together a look uniquely yours! You will also know what types of things to keep your eyes open for at the yard sales, junk sales, thrift shops, and other places of inexpensive finds that you frequent.

Let me know what kinds of ideas that you came up with in the comment section below!

Enjoy!

Garden Sheds Offer a Unique Focal Point in Your Cottage Garden

cottage

I wanted to share a recent letter from our email bag. Bill needed some help coming up with a few creative ideas for his new cottage garden project. He is trying to pull together a little cottage garden complete with raised beds and a Victorian style chicken coop, where an old above ground swimming pool used to be.

As I share with Bill, I hope a few of these ideas will also give you the creative boost that you need to get started on your own garden projects!

Pearl,
I enjoyed seeing the display of boxes. I have made a couple of Halloween boxes out of cigar boxes. They were appreciated. We have a church auction in October and I plan to make more boxes.

Help me out here….I have an 8′ x 10′ garden shed that has been used for chickens and is currently occupied by rabbits. I would like to re-paint it and decorate it in a Victorian style.

We recently removed an 18′ round above ground pool from the yard. I am making two 4′ x 8′ raised beds to put in this area, and I will also be using some wrought iron type fencing with it.

Any decorating ideas would be appreciated.

Bill

Dear Bill,

When you’re starting from scratch, you have so many wonderful options! You could do just about anything you can imagine to your little building!

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

You could…

  • Simply give it a pretty coat of paint

  • Paint a mural on the outside to make it look like a victorian house

  • Add a few wooden elements from an old Victorian house (can be found at salvage yards)

  • Put in a few stained glass windows – or paint the current windows with glass paint to look like stained glass windows… you can’t tell the difference from a short distance!

  • South side

    Inside view of window

    Closeup of right front window

  • Add a pretty front door, which you’ve painted a pretty color 😉

  • Add some wooden window shutters

  • Add a cupola on top

  • Put shingles, recycled slate, or tin on the roof

  • After you paint, add some white picket fencing around the outside of the building (you could nail it right to the sides)

  • Garden Shed with Hanging Tipsy Pots by snowbunny

  • Add a few window boxes & fill with pretty flowers & climbing vines such as morning glories

  • Add a few stones around the front to plant a “little cottage garden” inside

  • Lay down some flagstones for a cobblestone path

  • Make a little wattle fence to go around the Victorian cottage

  • If you don’t have any windows, hang up an empty window frame & treat it like a real window

  • Don’t let the fear of the “expected price tag” keep you from getting started with this wonderful project! Many times, you will be able to get these elements for free or very low cost if you think creatively!

    Here’s where to start:

    – Yard sales
    – Flea markets
    – Salvage yards
    – CraigsList.com
    – Free section of newspaper
    – Along the curb (many times you’ll see a free sign)
    – Beside a dumpster
    – Construction sites, they will usually let you have discarded items free!
    – Check with your local township to see what houses are scheduled to come down in your area, then go have a look & see if you can use anything in your project… ask for it 😉

Here are some more beautiful pictures of Garden Sheds to give you even some more ideas!

How to Market Your Hand Crafted Cards and Stationary

Have a product or idea that you want to market? Maybe the ideas I gave this reader will help get you started as well!

I hope you enjoy the pictures of the beautiful cards made by some of my friends! Just click on the pictures to see more of their work.

home made card   white and pink birthday card

    Dear Pearl,
I was someone who listened to you regularly in Baltimore on WBAL’s morning show. I enjoy your ideas and info. I was curious if you know of any way to “market” home made stationery? I am an avid rubber stamp fanatic, and enjoy making cards and gifts for family and friends. People have suggested that I sell what I’m making. Any ideas?
    Thanks! Teri Chason

    Dear Teri,

Here are a few ideas that you can start using right away!

  • How about selling wholesale or by consignment to local card shops, book stores, and specialty shops like bible book stores? You would sell the cards to them at a discount, or in the case of consignments, you would give them a % of the sale – after it’s made.

  • There are MANY home party companies out there like Avon, Watkins, Tupperware, Pampered chefs, etc. You could sell to the demonstrators & they could make some extra money by showing them at their parties. They could also be used as party gifts, and because you would have your contact info on the packaging, party goers would know how to get in touch with you to order more cards.

  • love cards  reminder card

  • Have your own home parties to showcase your products. You could also display other complimenting products from other people & earn a % of those sales.

  • Make up several beautiful 3 ring binders with each page displaying your goods. Send them to work, with friends, ladies groups etc. Have an order page in each binder. You could give gifts to the order takers for doing you the favor!

  • Keep your eye on the newspaper. Whenever you see an engagement, baby birth, or graduation announcement, send them a sample card and a cover letter explaining the service that you can offer them. For example… when someone has a new baby, they want to send out little announcement cards showing off their new little bundle of joy. Why not send them a sample “custom” birth announcement, and an order sheet?

  • Go visit florists and other delivery services. Show them your products and offer to provide them with custom note cards for their deliveries. Now, when a person wants to deliver a special bouquet, pot of flowers, or bunch of balloons, they can also choose to make the presentation even more personal by adding a special note card – instead of the same old same old little mass produced note cards.

  • Place an add in the paper saying you will provide cards & invitations for Christmas, weddings, other large parties or occasions. Not only could you craft the cards to their taste, but you could also offer an addressing & mailing service for them as well. Then, all they would have to do is supply you with the mailing list! You would not only be providing someone with beautiful unique invitations/cards, but saving them time!

  • Provide a Christmas list service to large companies and corporations. They will be happy to have beautiful cards, and the personal touch that comes from the service that you offer!

  • crown card card with roses

  • Sell your products online at places like Esty.com, which is exclusively for handcrafted items. You could also check out places like eBay store, Amazon, and Craigslist.

  • To get lots of exposure online, place ads in e-zines, newsletters, and websites that target your particular audience. Many sites (such as ours) have their own mailing lists that they use to share helpful information with their readers, and some of them also accept ads. If they don’t accept ads, offer to write a helpful article for their publication that they can use in their next issue. At the bottom of the article, be sure to include your contact information & website address.

  • fairy card christmas tree card

  • Be sure to always put your company name, contact info, and website if available, on the back of each card, so those who receive your cards can then order their own unique creations from you.

  • These are just a few ideas to get you started!
