I used to manage a garden center. I would not be happy with the kinds of mark-downs you were getting on what sounds like pretty decent mataerial, but the concept is sound.

We occasionally put those kinds of prices on old ugly plants (mostly because we wanted to see the thing get a chance to live), but there was a constant debate about what that was doing to the reputation of the nursery and did we want to promote that kind of buying behavior. Ownership usually backed up an initial sale, but what did not sell (but was still quite viable to someone like the you) was supposed to be pitched into compost.

You would be apalled at what gets thrown away at Home Depot. I rescued 10 orchids not too long ago but only after getting escorted by the HD store manager to the trash bin and then escorted out of the store with the unspoken admonition not to bother doing that again.

I just found your blog. I am a penny pincher and always make a beeline for the clearance racks. I can’t remember the last time I paid full price for a plant. A Little TLC and they do just great. If not, well atleast I didn’t pay full price!
